Our 28 Point Garage Construction Process
Building a new garage should be handled efficiently, professionally, and with attention to every detail. At Absolute Garage Builders, our experienced crew follows a proven 28-point process designed to keep each project moving while maintaining the quality our customers expect.
Our garage build process covers every major stage of construction, from site preparation and concrete work to framing, roofing, siding, and electrical. We use quality materials, proven construction methods, and a step-by-step approach to help make sure important details are not overlooked.
Every garage we build is customized around the homeowner’s property, needs, and preferences. We respect your property throughout the project and work to deliver a garage that is built correctly, completed professionally, and made to last.
The 28-Point Process
The Absolute Garage Builders 28-point process provides a clear roadmap for how a new garage comes together. While every project can vary based on the property and garage design, these construction details help us maintain a consistent approach from start to finish.
Site Preparation and Foundation
A strong garage starts with a properly prepared site and a solid foundation. This stage covers demolition when needed, site cleanup, base preparation, reinforcement, and the concrete work that supports the entire structure.
- Review the garage plan and property.
We start by making sure the planned garage fits the homeowner’s needs, property, and selected design. - Prepare for construction.
Before building begins, we review the project requirements and prepare the site for the work ahead. - Tear down the existing garage when needed.
If the project is replacing an older garage, our crew can remove the existing structure. - Remove the old concrete slab when needed.
When a new foundation is required, the existing concrete is torn out rather than simply building over it. - Clear demolition debris.
Old construction materials and concrete are removed so the site is ready for the new garage. - Prepare the crushed stone base.
A crushed stone base helps create a stable starting point beneath the new concrete foundation. - Form the Keystone-style footing.
Our basic garage construction uses a Keystone-style footing designed to provide a strong foundation for the structure. - Install 5/8-inch rebar reinforcement.
Steel reinforcement is added to strengthen the foundation and help support the garage. - Add wire mesh reinforcement.
Wire mesh provides additional reinforcement within the concrete. - Pour 4,000-psi concrete.
We use strong 4,000-psi concrete as part of our standard foundation construction. - Build a 4- to 5-inch concrete slab.
The concrete slab provides the durable floor and base for the new structure.
Framing the Garage
Once the foundation is ready, the garage begins to take shape. During framing, we build the wall system, secure the structure to the slab, add sheathing, and install the roof trusses that support the finished garage.
- Install a green-treated bottom plate.
Moisture-resistant 2×4 treated lumber is placed between the concrete and the rest of the wood framing. - Secure the bottom plate with anchor bolts.
The treated bottom plate is fastened securely to the concrete slab. - Frame the walls with stud-grade lumber.
We use 2×4 stud-grade lumber spaced 16 inches on center as part of the garage framing. - Install wall sheathing.
Half-inch wood-based sheathing is added to the framed walls to help create a strong, stable structure. - Use galvanized ring-shank nails.
These rust-resistant fasteners are designed to maintain a strong grip over time. - Engineer the roof trusses for the project.
The trusses that support the roof are designed according to the specifications of the individual garage. - Set the roof trusses.
Once the walls are ready, the engineered trusses are positioned to create the garage’s roof structure. - Install roof sheathing.
Sheathing is fastened over the roof framing to prepare the structure for the roofing materials. - Complete the gable ends.
The gable areas are enclosed as the garage structure takes its final shape.
Roofing, Siding and Exterior Construction
The exterior helps protect the garage from Chicago-area weather while giving it a finished look that works with your home. This stage includes roofing, siding, gable work, and structural reinforcement around larger openings.
- Install the roofing.
The roof is finished with materials selected to provide dependable protection from the elements. - Coordinate the shingle color with your home.
When possible, we can match the garage roofing closely to your home or work with your preferred shingle color. - Prepare the exterior for siding.
Once the main structure is complete, attention turns to protecting and finishing the garage exterior. - Install the selected siding.
Vinyl siding is a popular option, but the exterior can be customized based on the project. - Choose from additional siding materials.
Depending on the garage design, options can include composite siding, LP® SmartSide®, cement siding, stucco, and other materials. - Reinforce large garage openings.
Structural openings can use two 2×12 headers with flitch plates or laminated beams to provide dependable support and help prevent sagging over time.
Finishing the Build
The final stage focuses on completing the remaining construction details and making sure the garage is ready for use. Electrical work and required permitting are handled as the project moves toward completion.
- Complete the electrical work.
Electrical connections are completed as one of the final stages of the garage build process. - Complete the required electrical permitting.
The electrical portion of the project requires its own permit so the completed work meets applicable requirements.
The 28-Point Difference
A garage is a long-term investment in your property. Small construction details can affect how well the structure handles moisture, weight, changing temperatures, and years of everyday use. Our 28-point approach is designed to give those details the attention they deserve instead of taking shortcuts.
From the reinforced concrete foundation to the framing, roofing, siding, and electrical work, each phase builds on the one before it. Our crews take pride in their work, and if something needs attention during construction, we address it.
This detailed garage build process also gives homeowners a clearer understanding of what goes into their new garage. You are not simply buying a pre-made structure. You are getting a garage built from the ground up with materials and construction methods selected for the project.
