When to Replace Your Garage Door
Posted on January 19th, 2016
Paint Problems:
Painted or stained finish on wood garage doors can break, peel, and crack over time. In order to protect wood garage doors from rotting they will need to be refinished periodically. The finish can also discolor or fade due to UV exposure from the sun. When you notice cracks or holes in your door, it is time to replace.
Dents and Dings:
Dents and dings can build up over time on steel garage doors; this greatly lessens the garage doors appearance. Thicker steel generally lasts longer and will dent less. Garages that are non-insulated may allow you to push out the dings from the inside. In scenarios where you are cannot push out the dented sections, you may need to replace the section or the entire garage door.
Sagging Sections:
When wood garage doors are not properly maintained they have a tendency to sag. If the door is closed and you see gaps under the end of the garage door, it is time to replace or fix.
Increased Energy Bill:
When an older garage door is installed, it may not be well insulted. Insulated, well-sealed doors are important if you have a living space above or attached to the garage. Insulated garage doors help to keep rooms warm in the winter and cool in the summer. This results in lower energy bills. If your energy bill is rising, it may be time to replace your garage door with an insulated door.
Difficulties Opening and Closing:
Garage doors are equipped with several moving parts. If your garage door is not often opened and closed, these parts will wear out. If the springs are broken, the safety of your door is compromised and it will not function they way it should. This will often times result in the garage door to break or malfunction.
