Because of its durability, concrete is a good option for garage flooring. But the unfortunate thing about concrete is that unless it’s sealed, it’s highly porous, and it’s very easy for grease, rust stains, and dirt to accumulate over time.
If you’re like most of us, you don’t always have time to clean up the mess. But once you get around to it, here’s a quick, 6-step process for cleaning your garage floor.
- Clear the floor of anything that’s not nailed down. This includes cars, bikes, lawn equipment, and the like.
- Cover drywall and electrical outlets. Pin or tape a plastic drop cloth at least three feet up from the floor to prevent staining walls and damaging outlets.
- Sweep the floor. Obviously, this removes accumulated dust and dirt.
- Mix a cleaning solution. You can purchase degreasing solutions, or you can make your own by mixing 1/3 cup of detergent per gallon of warm water.
- Scrub the floor. Pour the solution on the floor and let it sit for 10-15 minutes to absorb grease and dirt. Then scrub to remove stains. We suggest using an inexpensive deck broom with short, thick bristles.
- Rinse the solution away. Use a high-pressure nozzle attached to your garden hose.
Use this as a starting point to make sure your garage floor is clean and well-kept. If you have more questions about your garage, our expert garage builders are happy to answer your questions. So, don’t hesitate to reach out for help with your garage or to discuss building a new one.
