Sound Advice: How To Make Your Garage Door Quieter

Posted on June 30th, 2021

It might feel obscene to hear your garage door screech, shudder and slam every time it is opened or closed. What often causes the door to make such a ruckus varies between the material of the door, type of garage door opener you have, and the size of the car garage itself.

Sound Advice: How To Make Your Garage Door Quieter

We’ve compiled a list of several tips below, if you’re looking for ways to make less of an announcement when you open or close the door:

  1. Check the seals around the door – The rubber seals lining the bottom and sides of your garage door will inevitably fade and warp over time due to the elements. Checking on and replacing the seals will not only help soften the door’s closing, but it will also keep water, debris and critters from creeping into your garage.
  1. Insulating your garage door – With most garage doors pre cut from metal or a similar building material, this means it will not include much protection from outside temperatures or noise. Installing insulation offers protection from these components.

Other benefits of insulating the door, walls and ceiling of your garage include less heat or air conditioning escaping your garage if it is attached to your home, a quiet space for you to play music or work out in without disturbing your neighbors, and a reduction in the amount of noise emitting from opening or closing the door.

  1. Consider the type of opener you have – Several name-brand garage door openers have created motors that are specifically designed to open quieter than older motors. If the rumbling of your garage door’s motor seems to be one of the leading causes of your noise problems, then you should consider investing in a quiet opener.
  1. Tune up the moving parts of your door – A typical garage door consists of rollers, rails, chains and other metal components that can rust or get worn down overtime. Your first instinct might be to grab the WD-40, however, you will be better off using oil to lubricate the rollers or chains in order to reduce any squeaks or screeching. It’s also important to check on all metal screws attached to the door or mechanics that move the door, to see if anything needs to be tightened or adjusted.
